Time is the most precious commodity we have on this planet.  The unfortunate thing is that most people only realize how important it is once it’s too late.  I got thinking about the topic of “time” when I was at the pool the other day and realized we all have the same 24 hours or 1440 minutes in a day, but it’s how we use our time that differentiates all of us.

It was just after 6am and I was getting ready to get into the pool for a swim session when I noticed that there were quite a number of other people at the pool.  The people that were in the pool were almost all over the age of 65.  That got me thinking…why is it that at that age people are hitting the pool and those that are younger are not here with me?  I came up with a few reasons:

1. The people older than 65 are always up early and swimming is a good social exercise for them.

2. Swimming is a great form of exercise that has minimal impact on the body.

3. They realize the importance of taking care of their bodies.

And it was this 3rd reason I came up with that really struck a chord and bothered me a bit.  Why do people wait until later in life to take advantage of swimming and why don’t more people come early in the morning before work or school?

Why wait for life to pass by and only learn how important it is for us to exercise, be it swimming, yoga, running or any other form?  If all those people I saw at the pool struggling to swim, some hobbling into the pool actually started at a younger age, perhaps their current conditions would be much better.

Stop for a minute (that’s only 1 minute off the 1440 you have for the day) and think about how you can use your time more efficiently and effectively.  How do you currently spend your time?  What can you do to improve your current lifestyle?

You always have a choice…time can be your friend or your enemy – it’s all about perspective.  If you think about it as The Rolling Stones said – “Time is on my side, yes it is!” – you’ll be ok.
