In today’s episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast we talk to Miyoko Schinner, vegan chef, cookbook author and television cooking show host. She has been promoting a vegan lifestyle for over 30 years. Her newly released cookbook, “Artisan Vegan Cheese” was voted top 5 vegan cookbooks for 2012. Miyoko teaches in the McDougall Program and at major festivals around the country. In fact, we had the privilege of watching Miyoko’s cooking demo at Healthfest in Marshall, Texas last week and we sampled her AMAZING vegan cheeses from Miyoko’s Kitchen.
Our intention was to talk vegan cooking with Miyoko, get some hacks for the pantry and about her Japanese heritage. We did get to all that, but we also heard so much about Miyoko’s connection with animals, how animals and humans differ in the way we eat and how we build community around food.
We hope you enjoy the show!

I really enjoyed this episode and thought it was really insightful. I feel that I learned a lot about the challenges that a person must face when becoming a vegan. Before listening to this episode I believed that a vegan diet was made up of mostly fruits, vegetables, and grains and because of this vegan food could not truly be satisfying. However, after listening to this podcast discuss the various ways that vegan food can be made to taste great and be satisfying my understanding of a vegan diet has completely changed. Becoming a vegan does not mean that a person must give up eating good tasting a wholesome food. I thought that another interesting point raised in the podcast was that it is far easier to be a vegan today than it was in the past because of all of the new and exiting vegan food options that didn’t exist previously. Overall I learned that beginning and maintaining a vegan lifestyle is not as difficult as it may seem. Switching to a vegan diet is beneficial as comes with many health benefits and with the use of a little creativity vegan food can taste really great.
Question: with a vegan diet do you find yourself struggling to meet the required amount of any of your macronutrients per day?
Glad you enjoyed this episode! We find that when eating a whole foods plant-based diet, there is no need to count calories or macronutrients. Adam is in no way struggling to meet his nutritional requirements!
Hi Plant Trainers! I’d like to start off by saying thank you for this awesome podcast! Growing up my family and I, like most other families in our society, would go out for dinner and eat a lot of unhealthy food. However, I managed to stay fit and not be overweight by working out and being physically active on a daily basis. With that being said, I never understood what the point of eating unhealthy foods if I was just going to work out and “burn” the calories, and would I always ask myself, “Why am I eating this again?”. Afterall, if I’m already working out and being active, mind as well eat healthy and have a good diet. But that wasn’t the main issue. I was always interested in eating healthy and I always wanted to live a healthy life. I didn’t do it for anyone but myself, for my own benefit, I wanted to look fit and skinny. As I already mentioned, when I was younger I didn’t care which food I ate, because later on I would “burn” everything and feel healthy again. However, as I got older I started caring more about the food I ate. I hated putting in the hard work and working out, just so that later on I can eat something unhealthy and fattening. So one time I decided that I would eat healthy for a couple of days and still work out. I will admit, it was very difficult. However, it was also very rewarding. I felt great after working out and eating something healthy. I felt like I had more energy and was just overall healthier. It’s very hard for me to maintain a healthy lifestyle currently but I want to do it and not just for a couple of days, but for my entire life. In the beginning I was like everyone else. I was skeptical and kept asking people, “How do you eat salads all day?” thinking that all they ate was salad. However, I was very wrong to prejudge in such way. From this episode I learnt that you can have different types of food, not just salad. For example, in the episode Adam talks about how he tried some vegan cheese samples which were amazing. I also agree with Shoshana and Miyoko that being vegan doesn’t mean that you can only eat salads because that’s just a myth. I liked how Adam mentioned that people would not be able to distinguish between vegan foods and regular foods, for example vegan cheese and dairy cheese, and that if they would be able to tell the difference, the only difference would be that vegan is more tasty. I found that interesting and even believe that it’s true.
Overall I really enjoyed listening to this podcast as I was looking for some more information about this topic.
I just have one question:
How do you become full after a meal while being plant based/vegan? Do you have more than three meals per day or do you eat the same amount of food as the average person who is not on a plant based or vegan diet.
Thank you Adam, Shoshana, and Miyoko for this AMAZING podcast!
We definitely eat WAY more than just salads…and the salads we eat are fantastic! Thanks for your other questions, we may tackle that on another “Hey Plant Trainers” episode!
