Whether through training or nutrition, I’m always looking for ways to improve my performance.
There are so many products available on the market that say they’re performance enhancers (legal and illegal) in various forms. I, of course stay away from all illegal substances and am always interested in finding the right foods to enhance my performance and reduce my recovery time so that I can train again as soon as possible.
Many of you already know that I am a huge fan of the Vega product line and use it regularly in my training. It provides me with true clean plant-based nutrition.
I was recently introduced to another product that is a whole food and completely natural.

I am always skeptical when trying new products, but always do so with an open mind.
I first used ENERGYbits before one of my long endurance runs.
When I opened the great travel sized tin, I saw many little green tablets. In the directions provided, they say it may be better to swallow them without chewing as the taste in an acquired one. So of course, like many, when told not to do something, I did it. Ya I threw the recommended 30 tabs into my mouth and started chewing them. As warned, my mouth & teeth turned green. The tabs smell like fish food, of course that makes a lot of sense as it is algae and that is fish food! The taste, wasn’t so bad. I’m used to eating dulse, nori, kelp and some other sea vegetables and so I wasn’t really afraid of the taste and actually in a weird way enjoyed it. By the way, the green color in my mouth and on my teeth washed away after I drank some water.
I felt quite strong during the run and was able to sustain my pace (as I was supposed to do anyway) throughout the run. I felt energized throughout and still strong when I was done. During the run, whenever I felt the need to spit some saliva, it flew out green…I thought it was cool, but people that saw me may have thought otherwise!
My second experience with ENERGYbits was a few days ago. Sunday mornings I do a swim and run training combo. Usually after the swim of anywhere from 2500m to 4000m, I do either a tempo or hill training run. This time my swim training included a 1000m time trial and my run was a 5km time trial. After swimming I tend to have a quick snack of some kind: a Larabar, dates or banana. When I go for my run training after having those snacks, I usually have some stomach cramping leading to a lot flatulence. Sunday I decided to pop 30 ENERGYbits with a bit of water prior to the 5km time trial run. I did my warm-up and drills and then proceeded to the 5km time trial. This is a tough 5km course with a couple of challenging hills. I ended up averaging 4:20mins/km and finished with a personal best on the course.
Are these results because I had the ENERGYbits or due to my progressive training? I’d like to think it’s because of all the training I’ve been doing. However, I can say that my energy levels were strong throughout and I did not experience the stomach pains and flatulence I usually do when having those other snacks prior to running after my swim.
